First, we start with a bodyweight training system, and then we upgrade to weighted calisthenics to speed up our progress (once we can already do at least 12 pull- ups, 15 dips and 25 pushups).
Now you don’t need to upgrade to weighted calisthenics, it’s up to you because you’ll still look good and be strong even if you stick to bodyweight training.
However weighted calisthenics will accelerate your progress in strength and muscle gain.
You could also combine the two programs if you have a busy schedule and the gym is far away, by replacing 1 push day and 1 pull day from the bodyweight program with a weighted pull day and a weighted push day, for example.
Another way to save time is to combine push day or pull day with leg day, or even to do a full body workout just 2 times a week.
While most people plateau quickly with pure bodyweight, we can still get to quite a high level without weights.
This is because we consistently increase the difficulty of our workouts, (by upgrading to more advanced exercises), while also keeping a good balance between volume & intensity.
Here’s what a session of bodyweight training looks like:
We do a few sets of advanced-level exercises, (that are hard for us to do), and then few more sets of an easier exercise with more volume.
Eventually, we upgrade to more advanced exercises for the first sets, and replace the last sets with the old exercise.
This is the system that gets you to the elite level.
